De gustibus . . .

My Office

I sat in my “office” this afternoon. A couple strolled by with their young child on their way to the public pool down the avenue in the woods.

Several hours later they strolled back, wet towels on shoulders, dripping hair plastered to foreheads, smiles on faces, strung out along the sidewalk.

I thought “How dull! To spend those hours just floating in that sunlit pool!”

And then I realized:

How dull! To spend those hours reading Carlo Ginzburg on Tristram Shandy and translating Medieval Latin!

  1. My two young grandchildren love the water park on 87th Avenue and theirs might be voices you hear, at twilight, walking home under the elms.
